The Baby Shoes Project: Newsletter Number Five, 5th August, 2016
Thanks to another 16 contributions this month we now have eighty (yes, 80!) stories ready for publication bringing us to a massive 30,994 words. I'd like to take this opportunity to congratulate Fran Tracey whose story "Size 3s" tipped us over the 30 thousand mark. Well done Fran – lovely story too!
Of course summer time is well and truly here, school is out and thoughts of hying off to sunnier climes are at the forefront of many of our minds. So it's only reasonable to expect a slight slowdown in submissions. Hopefully, things will begin to pick up again in a month or so. We're half way there folks – let's not stop now!
You may remember that I asked for opinions on whether I should ask schools to take part in the project. Well, after some interesting discussions and varying points of view I have decided that I am not going to go down that particular route this time. The reason for that is that I took the decision very early on that, providing authors stuck to the remit of the project, that there would be very few holds barred. So our collection of stories includes some with adult content and wouldn't be suitable for children to read. If, at the end of the day, this project turns out as successfully as I believe it will, then perhaps I could think about producing an under 16 version and target schools for that. But that's for another day – another year in fact. I still have to put this baby to bed if you'll pardon the pun.
On the other hand, I am in the process of targeting those UK universities which offer a degree in creative writing. It's a time consuming and, if I'm honest, tedious process of finding the right department and the right member of staff to write to. But it's coming along. I've written to about a half dozen so far, most of which had automated out of office replies saying that they were on holiday until the end of the month. Heavens, how dare they take a summer break? But I have had one positive reply so I think it's worth pursuing. And my good friend Broc Silva who is, himself, heading off to university to begin his creative writing degree has promised to spread the word among his fellow students. Thanks for that Broc. I owe you one!
I did agree with my publisher – the esteemed Kensington Gore – that I would try to persuade a celeb or two to take part. I wanted to wait until I was reasonably sure that I would be able to collect enough material to make to book viable. And now I am more than reasonably sure – but, where to begin? I'm struggling a little bit with this aspect of it. So if any of you lovely people just happen to know any celebs, you would have my undying gratitude if you would approach them or pass on contact details to me. It would give a massive boost to sales, thereby increasing the coffers of the Make-A-Wish charity. And besides it would be nice for our writers to boast to their nearest and dearest that they have just had a story published in a book alongside a story by A-lister XYZ.
That's just about it for this month folks. Thank you all once again for your continued support and your enthusiasm. If you find yourself bored and have a few minutes to spare please do use the usual links to spread the word. Every bit really does help.
